My son is 5.5 yrs and presently studying in KG in india and we would be moving to HK in mid may so i want help to know what is it that the schools in HK ask the child or his parents in the interviews so that i can prepare him for the same before hand.
Thanx.

Our 5 year old reported the following (this was CDNIS, but likely fairly standard):

- what he likes, dislikes, and why
- to draw something (anything he liked)
- to read something
- to write his name

It all seemed fairly standard in determining his development level in terms of how he expresses himself, and a quick assessment of reading and writing skills.

I heard one story (hopefully it was in jest) of one school putting a toy on the table, then rejecting the child immediately because they looked at it (were distracted). Could prepare for that I suppose by telling him they are going to play a game with him to see if they can get him to look at a toy, and he wins the game by not looking at it (all sounds a bit farcical to me - I hope it isn't true).

I can't remember the name, but was one of the more "exclusive" primary schools with reputation for long waitlists.

I would say don't worry, listen to anecdotes. Waiting lists in Hong Kong don't mean much. Good luck!

The interview is also a 2-way process, you can see if you like the school aswell.

Hi, this is shrikant from India. i am also moving from india to HK, not yet firmly decided. I have heard that schooling is a big problem for indian kids. My kid is 5 yrs old and just started to learn hindi/marathi. Have you moved to HK? hows the schooling thing going on?
Can you share some thoughts.

Schooling is a issue in hk for any one . Basically English should be good . As your kid is 5 years old he can apply for esf ( though admissions are over ) . Depends upon where you are staying if say central
Woodlands , small world , ims have primary . Mostly all international schools might be full. You can apply and keep it if you are lucky then you might get a call .

Thanks chhavi. My kid is currently in Cambridge international shipping school in pg3 which is sr kg in state board. So what's the alternative if ever don't get admissions.. And do they admission in the middle of year.

Shrikant
