Information sharing about ESF application

Hi, I am a mother of 4 year old kid who unfortunatelly failed the interview. We got the reaon. It will be too long to explain here. I discussed the matters with kindergarten, and the teachers all say that my kid is fluent in English, which I am also sure. It was a 1st interview for her, and my kid just did not understand how to answer to the interviewers. I am sure that my kid would have been accepted if she knows "how to" (of course, some kids do not need prepare). I will try for the 2nd one later. Preparation will be good for some kids.

hkislander, I am so sorry to hear that your kid failed the interview. A few of my friends' kids have failed the interview also and their children's first language is English.

Good luck with the second interview. Your daughter might have just been nervous and didn't know what to say.

MayC,

Sorry to hear those failed the interview....
I thought ESF schools only tested the children's oral English fluency during the interview, why the schools rejected kids who meet their language requirement? Did ESF feedback to your friends with any reasons? Or simply just because their kids are too shy or nervous during the interview?

hkislander - sorry to hear that the interview didn't go so well. I'd be interested to hear what it was that constitutes a "fail".

nvmom - I picked up your pm and replied. Thank you.

What's the difference between first and second interview? Anyone?

from what i understand, the difference between a first and second interview is if you don't get a second, it is because you "convinced" them the first time round. you're in.

second interviews are for kids who the interviewers are a bit uncertain about. on the day of the first interview the kids might have been having an off day, might have been ill and therefore might have been much less communicative or interactive than the interviewers noticed when they went to do the school observation. they don't want to write the child off, so they invite them back for a second interview, which is basically a repeat of the first interview.

the purpose is to determine which children they feel are a good fit for the school.

hope that helps, and please understand that this response is from a parent perspective, not from the esf! they might have a totally different answer!

Congrats, dimsum mum!

This thread is so useful. I'll definitely be referring back to this when we submit our application later this year.
