Year 5 ESF Question

I've been getting increasingly frustrated with our son's school. They're unable or unwilling to give us a curriculum - this has been a long term problem and I've finally given up on the ESF being transparent about what the kids are supposed to be learning.

So my question is ... where can I find a curriculum which shows what the kids have supposed to have learnt.

Say, year 5 -- what is the expected outcome for Math. Would they be able to multiply 3 numbers by 3 numbers? Division? What about basic sciences? What are they expected to know by the time they finish their year? English?

I've seen this: International Baccalaureate (IB): PYP Grade 5 Mathematics Curriculum

Is this what your kids are learning in school?

On our schools' intranet (Moodle-site) a curriculum letter is posted prior to start of a new unit of inquiry. This is the same for all years. It shows the central idea, lines of inquiry, related concepts, etc. Then it has a section on math and language skills that will be done during the unit and it has a section on how you can help your child. My experience is that the range of math ability is quite wide. Why don't you call / contact the teacher. Our teachers have been very helpful providing information, giving tips / materials to support my child. My oldest also uses the IXL website since not everything fully clicked yet in terms of maths and she enjoys the tasks (you put it on UK and you get everything per year ... instead of grade).

Wish we had something like the curriculum letter on our VLE site.

Just trying to get an idea of what other09 schools are doing before we approach our school .

Last year our sons teacher pointed us to the UK numeracy strategies site when I asked her for the maths curriculum.

Now that I know that something called a] curriculum letter exists I will ask them cor it .

If I am not asking too much would it be possible to see what the English and math curriculum lrtters look like? My email is [email protected] . THANKS.

.

Will post an example of whats on our VLE (intranet site .. ) at Kennedy to give everyone an idea about why I'm concerned.

Louiseamanda : Unfortunately the IB (PYP to be precise) curriculum / system does not have textbooks or so we're told. A textbook would make life very easy, so we can figure out the progress and it would also imply that all the kids in the ESF are working towards the same goals.

I do plan to contact the teachers, but I'd also like to know what is going on at other schools within the ESF system. For some reason or the other we tend to get far less information about what is going on in school compared to other schools

FYI, this is what our school's intranet page looks like for the current unit of enquiry. Pretty much the same for all the years.

Just to ensure that I'm not looking at the wrong section of the site I've asked our son's teacher to point me to the correct section.

That's what we have, but then even broken further per unit in a curriculum letter, and that gets communicated to the parents and online.

FYI .. this is what we got back from our school in response to my request for the curriculum.

I think I need to get organized and ask parents from more schools and classes to email me what their schools are sending to them as the curriculum for the term so that we can get a good idea of what different schools do.
