Words of the Week - ESF P1

I think implementing the IB programme is going to take some time. The teachers etc are still going through the training. Our school (KJS) has also not implemented the IB programme.

I found flash cards not as effective for kids beyond 4 or 5 as it is for younger ones, yet phonics does help a lot. My son's school uses THRASS, which presents all possible spellings of the same sounds (e.g. c, k ck, ch, q for [k]) to help develop their reading and spelling skills. It seems much more complicated than Letterland or Jolly Phonics, but in observing the progress of my son's peers, I'm deeply impressed. At Prepartory (equivalent to K3), most of them who didn't spell very well at the beginning of the school year managed to write sentences with high accuarcy at the end of the school year!!!

Linda,

I agree with you. As a teacher, I find that Thrass is the best method of teaching phonics. It's important to teach little ones that a letter have different sounds so that they won't get confuse.

The chart that I sent you, is actually based on Thrass phonics.

Have a look at all the resources at: www.getreadingright.com . Go to Free resources and look under synthetic Phonics games and Playing with sounds resources. Here you will find lots of free games and activities you can use at home, to help your son remember those Camera words.
Good luck!
