Words of the Week - ESF P1

Hi Moms,

We get 5 new words a week, which I believe are "camera words" and he needs to be able to recognise instantly. We're doing our best to go through them every week, but now we're in week 3, he's already forgotten the 1st week's words. Anyone got any tips to share?

will email you something that might be of help to . A phonics chart that may help you guys. Check your hotmail

I hated that sort of thing. Don't sweat it. Just keep reading him books and putting your finger under various words and the reading will come.

He's not being tested on them, so young?

I second what loupou recommended. Just read lots of books and put your finger under the words while reading. My son has started P1 at an ESF too. He doesn't bring sight words home though. In the classroom the sight words are all on one wall in big writing. They bring a library book home each week that we have to read to/with them. They choose the books themselves. My son is having a great time at school, it's a pleasure to see him so happy at school.

We have been doing lots of reading. In addition to his weekly library book, he brings home a Home Reader which he changes 3 times a week. I think its a Stage 1 reading book. He's got a fantastic memory. I read it once pointing out the words, and he's then able to read it back to me. Have also borrowed a few Stage 1 Reading books from our local library and we enjoy reading them too.

Faith thanks for sending me the phonics chart. The Sight words can't be spelt phonetically right?

Another friend who's also a teacher suggested making flash cards of the words. So that's what we've done. Will later put them up in his room. So far there's only a couple he keeps mixing up. Thought we were in worse shape, and I didn't want to fall behind so soon. :)

Loupou, I believe they are assessing the kids early now and grouping them.:eek:

Some sight words can be phonically spelt. It's just a matter of matching the right set of alphabets. I might be able to send you a couple sets of sight words. Not sure if they are the same. As far as I can remember, P1 kids are meant to know 40 sight words

Interesting. My kids were in a local kindergarten in the equivalent of the P1 ESF year. They had weekly spelling tests, which I loathed.

I guess different ESF schools do things differently then ? My son is basically having a ball. The teacher said she was "assessing" the kids on a daily basis just to see their strengths and weaknesses and at the end of the year there will be a report. No tests and no mention of grouping yet.
