Hi!!

I have 2 kids- 6yrs(Nov. 2003 born) and 3 yrs.(Nov 2006 born). My older one is in class 2 and the younger one in Kindergarten 1 in India. Which classes are they eligible for in the ESF system?

Also, which month does the academic year start in?

Would really appreciate your help in the matter. Thanks!:)

The academic year in HK for ESF starts in August. You need to apply a year ahead of the expected entry date.

Your second child will be eligible for P1 admission into an ESF primary school in September 2011. This means you have to apply in September 2010 (this year).

Your first child would go into P4 in September 2011.

The age bracket at ESF is January 1 - December 31st so you start P1 the year you turn 5,
P2 the year you turn 6
P3 the year you turn 7
P4 the year you turn 8
P5 the year you turn 9 etc etc

Hope that helps!

For ESF Primary school the Academic year is starting in mid-August. I think its the 19th. My 2002 born, will be in Y4 this August.

thank you both. sure it helps. We are expecting to be in HK sometime between Sept-Dec 2010. Can I apply for K2 for my younger one and P2 for the older one right away?

Do you know where you will be living as yet? I think you could apply to the ESF kindergarten at Hillside (Stubbs Road) for K2 as they have recently expanded so might well have a place for your little one. Check out their website:

You will need to apply for P3 (not P2) for your older one for August 2010 but will depend where there is a place. If you are on HK island it will be a bit easier as there are several ESF pre schools. Best to call ESF and ask directly which school might have an opening..

thanks munchkinmama! appreciate your help!
Last couple of questions-
1. Which are some of the better ESF schools I sd look at for the older one?
2. How does ESF rate on extra- curricular activities? W'd be happy if the school my kid attended was not just academically oriented.

My 2004 born will go to Year 2 in August, so your 2003 born should go to Year 3. I also have 2 2006 borns. They will go to K2 in September and I need to apply for ESF Primary September 2010 so that they can start August 2011 when all 2006 born children will start.

I think you may be a little late in the process so you might not have a huge amount of choice in where you get a place-Best call ESF central admissions office ASAP! Glenealy, Bradbury, Peak School and Kennedy would be my top choices - but I'm sure others will give you more input..

I would call in your catchment area directly (look at ESF site to see which school that is) since you're looking for Y3 slots. Some schools have quite an extensive bus schedule outside the catchment (e.g. Bradbury) while others only serve their own area (e.g. QBS, which would be quite far, however I do know they have one bus which serves a part of Robinson Road. All ESF parents were asked to secure places last week, transfer first school fees, etc. so I think they should have an idea of where the open spaces are pretty soon. For your 2006 born you can apply this September. You can either put him/her in ESF Kindy (K2 if they have spaces) or find another KG for K2. ESF will only give ESF Kindy priority for those who have been in both K1 and K2 so only K2 won't give you priority, so you can go to any KG, it won't make a difference for them. Just don't forget to apply in September for 2011 Year 1 applications.
