When to start schooling process?

I have a 10 month old and was wondering when to start the whole school application program for her.

We dont have her in playgroups yet, and will probably join organized nursery/playgroup systems when she is around 2 years old.

1) Is it difficult to get into playgroup systems?

2) Is it best to join a playgroup affiliated with the nursery school that we want her to attend?

3) How early do we need to start the process if we are looking for Autumn 2009 admission?

We live in Tung Chung, but dont really know much about the nurseries and playgroups around here. We will probably need to consider moving back to HK Island or maybe to Kowloon West next year.

Thanks for any advice and suggestions.

I'm not familiar with Tung Chung so cannot provide any recommendations for this area. However in response to your other questions.

1) It really depends on school's popularity but there will usually be a class limit of around 8 toddlers. I believe most are on a 'first come first served' basis so enquire a few months in advance in case there is a waiting list. Also note some schools only offer mom/baby playgroups up to 2yrs old, as a lot of the locals will put their kids into 5 day nursery class when they reach 2yrs!

2) Doesn't really matter if playgroup is affiliated with nursery school but obviously will help child settle in easier if they are already familar with the surroundings and teachers.

3) For Autumn 2009 admission, usually apply one year in advance ie.Sept 2008. Most local schools will have a deadline, international schools are more flexible but always better to apply early since a lot of interviews are conducted in Nov.

Hope this helps a little.

In Tung Chung

I have lived in Tung Chung since 2001 - my daughter is 6 and attending Discovery College.

My baby is 4 months old.

We will probably go to play group and pre-school in Discovery Bay as it is quick and easy to get to from Tung Chung - but new choices opening all the time!
