what do you do with your kids over the summer?

I am going to stay in hong Kong for 2 months over the summer. I am looking for ideas on summer camps, or swimming, or science camps,or what sorts of things you do with your kids over the summer. I would really like to get them into some registered programs, which ideally would be in cantonese as they could use a bit of immersion! Are the YMCA camps held all over hong kong, or are they all at 1 location? I'll be at the gold coast using public transit.

Now that they are in their early teens, after our big 2 week outing in the summer, I plan to let them laze around the house this summer.

I would love it if they could find summer jobs, but they may still be underage.

When they were younger I would usually take them to visit my mother overseas and send them to day-camp while we were there. One summer I think our overseas trip was shorter than usual and we did the ESF sports camp for a week or two.

Thanks for the links! The YMCA looks like it will work out well, there is even 1 at the gold coast where we will be staying!

The ourward bound courses look great but still too young! That is exactly the kind of think that will good for them as they get older. They really need outdoor energy burning activities. We have never stayed this long in Hong Kong so I am really worried what to do to keep my oldest 2 occupied all summer! I will be there mostly by myself with 3 kids. My 5 and 7 year old are very very social and we know absolutly no children, when we are there for just a few weeks they are so bored! Restaurants and shopping are just not going to do it! We will have no bikes, no scooters, hardly any toys, no friends to play with, no camping. A summer in HK is going to be very different that a summer at home in canada with all the conviences of home. We will stay at the gold coast so at least we can go outside and walk around and not worried about being run over (also have a 1.5 year old).

What about swimming lessons? I can find public pools but nothing about lessons. Does anyone know if there are lessons anywhere in Tun Mun or Tseun Wan

YMCA is best choice for those ages. Most classes will be in TST though.

Bikes and Scooters : Very easy to rent in many places for very reasonable prices. Lantau, Shatin, TST and many more.

Camping : As long as you dont mind paying for it, you can do "lazy camping" where someone rents and sets everything for you. See http://www.oohlala-hk.com/camping they are right on the beach and you can spend several days there.

SurfCamp : the same people also run yearly surfing camps; http://www.treasureislandhk.com/ contact them for details.

Swimming Lessons : very popular in Hong Kong. Go to your local public pool and look at the swimmers. You will find a few people that are coaching. Ask them. Many of them will have brochures they will give you.

Hong Kong is full of beaches which are full of Sand, Water, shells etc; all the things kids love. You could go to a different beach every day for several months and not exhaust them all. Here is a list of some of the popular ones, but there are many more:

Lastly, public pools specific for the kids:
SaiKung, Hammer Hill, TsingYi all are kid focused with toys, sprayers, slides etc etc. The one in this picture is Saikung: http://www.lcsd.gov.hk/beach/en/swim-intro.php

Canada is so over-rated :-)

Thanks for the links! I really appreciate it.

As far as bikes go, do you mean you rent a bike per use, or you can rent one to have at home as long as you want it?
.

Swimming lessons,

are they run by individual people who you hire, or the pool facility sets up lessons?

Renting Bikes : you usually rent them by the hour or by the day. I've not found any places that will rent to take home. If you actually have the space and also have a car to move bikes around, its not too expensive to buy.

The lessons are usually run by organizations. The facilities are run by the government. We have used these guys before but they may not operate where you are : http://www.hoitin.net/
