Were you Denied a place in a school for your child?

Hi!

I relocated to HK in September, in the New Territories, and was confronted with two realities:
1. Canto-medium schools won't take my child because it is too difficult for them to try to deal with parents who don't speak Chinese.
2. English-medium schools are full and waitlists can be months or years long.

We have been forced to home school. A local friend of mine informed me this is against the law in Hong Kong. I am planning on taking this issue up with the EDB. Either the EDB must force schools to accept English monolingual families from overseas, and leave openings for that purpose, or they must create a space and resources for homeschooling.

I have seen on other threads several parents playing the waiting game and doing home schooling and private tutoring in the mean time.

It would be wonderful to have some statistic of some sort, as in how many expats in Hong Kong also have this problem, how long they have to wait before their child can get into school, and what were the issues why they had to wait at all for an education.

Please, even if your child is in school now, could you let me know your circumstances of your ordeal on this thread, so I can have some numbers for the EDB to chew on? Thanks!

I will not be giving the EDB any person's personal information, but if you don't mind sharing that, please feel free to PM me.

Thanks!

why not look up the closest government school that is designated a school for non-chinese speaking children?

we've enrolled our son into one and he'll start P1 in september.

it should be fairly easy to look up on the EDB website which schools have this designation and then to contact the school to find out about a space for your child....
