Under priority one but no intervew at ESF

HKIS does not give priority to Americans per se. Only to those who already had 2 years of US accredited education. A debenture is usually the best way. My friend, all Americans, were turned down while non-Americans with debentures get spots. In general spaces would be even harder than ESF ...

wegetable - Did you consider Hong Kong Academy? It is a US curriculum school with an international student body.

HKA teaches the PYP / IB as far as I know. They're now in Kennedy Town but will be moving to Sai Kung in 2013 ... so something to consider. They also implemented a debenture. Must say a lot of parents are very happy there.

Sorry, Mom2Sofie is right - HKA is an IB/PYP school. I meant to say that it is US accredited. I have several friends with children there and they are very happy with the school. I think it's got a diverse range of nationalities as well. I had intended to apply for my own child, but Sai Kung will be too far for us. Wegetable - were do you live/are you going to live in Hong Kong?

Just heard from couple people that they are under Cat. 2 and their kids go to Hillside Kidny, they all get in first around of interview at QBS.

ESF kindy kids are all guaranteed an interview, doesn't matter if they're category 1 or 2. They may not be offered a space.

ESF Kindy, siblings, and children of FT ESF staff gets guaranteed interview, regardless of their Category. If you're Cat 2, and not in one of these groups, your chances in most schools will be 0 to none this year ...

probably old news, but from the ESF website....

A record number of applications has been received at The English Schools Foundation (ESF) this year, for Year 1 and Year 7 places in the nine primary and five secondary schools run by ESF and the two Private Independent schools operated by ESF Educational Services Ltd. around Hong Kong island, Kowloon and the New Territories.

This year, 2,893 children are competing for 1,278 Year 1 places, an application number which is 38% higher than in 2008. For Year 7 admission, applications have gone up by 55% to 445 competing for 130 places. Year 1 applicants will be notified by post this weekend whether they will be invited for an interview.

....ESF schools are not selective in admissions. They receive a subsidy from the Hong Kong Government to provide an education for English speaking children who cannot access the local system. An increasing number of local Chinese families and permanent residents are choosing ESF education.

I wonder how many of those children are P1, like wegetable's?

Wegetable, does the system have your son registered as already in HK?

I have heard Woodlands is starting another P1 at one of their schools. Their website might have the information.

I know it is easy to say, but wegetable, I do believe your child will be accepted.

i see someone earlier posted the link to the text i pasted. wish there was a breakdown on how many of the 2,893 applicants are P1, P2, and P3.

good luck wegetable and all others who are in your situation.
