Temporary Schooling for 9 year old

We are planning on living in HK for 6-8 months starting in January.
Has anyone put their child into a school for that short of a time period?
She is in a small private school in the states and I am looking for the same.
Could homeschool, but wanting some socialization for her and some "down time" for mom.
Thanks!

I would suggest calling up the American International School and ask if they can fit your daughter in for those few months you are in HK. It might be tough as their places are very sought after and waiting lists are long.
I'm not sure where you will be located once arriving in HK, but you can call up some of the smaller International schools like Japanese International (they have an Intl section) and Hong Lok Yuen International, both these schools are in the NT and more likely not to have huge waiting lists.

When applying, I wouldn't mention the temporary conditions. Many schools would turn you away just because they could open the place for children who will be here for a while.

It's not a bad time to move to HK though, rumor has that there will be many families moving after Chinese New Year (or this summer) due to the financial crisis--it may make it easier to get into the school you'd like.

HKIS is probably the most "American" school in HK because they place students from the US in their first round of applications. Hong Kong Academy may also be another option for you. From what I understand about the American School (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong!), their population is not primarily American children. According to the statistics on their website, 76% of their student population does not consider English their first language. Not really a problem if you want an international experience, but if you want a seamless transition, it's probably not going to be the place for your daughter.

Another option is to homeschool and then have afternoon activities. There are so many options here for drama, dance, sports, art, Mandarin, etc. Look into the laws re: homeschooling here though. If I understand correctly, you may need to work with an accredited/registered school.

Feel free to PM if you have other questions. I feel like I've just waded through the school maze myself!

Definitely don't mention it will only be temporarily. I've met plenty of people who were here less than a year due to various circumstances. If you want to keep things as easy as possible, don't say a word. And you never know, you could end up here longer than you think as well.

I would definitely look at HKIS since you're from the States, it's not the cheapest option at all though.

Thank you for all of the replies, I have emails into HKIS and HKA, but everyone is out for X-mas breaks right now. Hoping to hear as soon as school starts back up!
