St. Paul's School

Does anyone have information/comments for St. Paul's Primary or even Kindergarten? What is their teaching medium (English only, English/Cantonese, or English/Mandarin)? This school seem very highly regarded by the locals, and several people have tried to tell us to send our son there.

there are a couple of st. paul's... which one do you mean?
is it the convent school in causeway bay?

carang, to tell you the truth, I don't know, since people tell my husband St. Paul and that they have several campuses. . . and that's all the information he gave me. I know there is one in Causeway Bay that they say is VERY hard to get into. Since we live in Pokfulam, I would prefer something closer to home of course, but would probably travel to Causeway Bay too if push comes to shove.

I think St. Pauls in Causeway Bay (the convent one) is girls only. I know secondary is, and primary possible too- they may take boys in the kindergarten.
They have a co-ed. school, in Happy Valley?

St. Paul's

I believe the St. Paul's you are looking for is the one in Kennedy Road. It's a co-ed school and is very difficult to get into. They use English as the medium of instruction and is a highly regarded school in the local education system. They are moving soon to Aberdeen which means that you may be within the catchment area if you try and apply early - good luck!

If you have a boy, then it should be either St Pauls College (all boys) or St Paul's Co-ed (St Pauls Convent in Causeway Bay and Happy Valley are all girls). Both schools (in fact all 4) are highly regarded schools. Both use English as medium in teaching. They are not easy to get in. If you have identified either one as where you want your son educated, then you need to find the right kindie to enrol your boy as that would increase your son's chance of getting into these schools.

just a reminder, local schools have very different approach and philosophy than international schools. Local schools have pretty strong emphasis on academic work and discipline, so studying at the St Paul's schools may mean more homework, projects (where the parent might be involved), tests and pressure for good grades.

In deciding which school to enrol your son to, I guess you'd need to first determine what you and your son need and what best meet these needs.

Thanks for the responses.

My husband and I constantly stuggle in trying to find the "right" school & teaching style for my son. He is more old school because his mom pushed him really hard and he went to very good schools & universities in China (his mom brags that when he was 2 he could recite chinese poems, can pick up words from the newspaper, etc.:blahblah). My parents also pushed me hard, and I really resented it. . .therefore, I try not to push my son and worry about being too lax.

Are there moms here who have send their kids to St. Paul? How do you find it?

I went to St.Paul's co-ed primary & secondary school. It was a very tough school back then and it probably still is now. In the past the school really pushed the students to excel in academics and also classical music. Every student had to learn a musical instrument. Now I think they want students to be all-rounded so they give students more choice - academics+ sports/music/other extra curricular activities. It is definitely not an easy school to get into. I heard that even kids with both parents being alumnae cannot get in! If you really want your kid to go there, the kindergarten to go to is the one at Braemar Hill (don't know the exact name). Very expensive and exclusive kindergarten where the little kids have birthday parties at 5-star hotel function room. Personally I am not too keen to send my kid to that kind of environment.

Another really good local school to think about is DPS on Kowloon side. (for boys only) My husband went there and he thinks it is a better school than St.Paul's. The program is less rigid and the students there are very well-rounded. You may want to check it out.
