Short Break

Surprising DH with three nights away somewhere. Catch is I am bringing the kids too (6 and 4 years old).

I have narrowed it down (unless someone has another idea...) to either Sanya or Kaohsiung.

Which one do you prefer and why (and where did you stay)??

Have only been to Sanya and to be honest we didn't care for it. We went 3 years ago, and hopefully things have improved since then. But we just felt the service was poor and food wasn't that great. I think we stayed at the Sheraton in YB.

How about Thailand? Phuket is always fun.

Thanks Rani. I suspected it didn't have a lot to offer, especially for the family unit.

Just spent a weekend in Bangkok with a girlfriend and didn't really like it. The people were rude, totally want to rip you off and don't care that you know the real value -- pay the tourist amount or go elsewhere is the attitude!

We loved the hotel and the hotel staff were great but as soon as you stepped out it was not nice. So Thailand is off my list at the moment.

We were in Bangkok the same time as you and I agree we got stressed for the same reasons. Plus now that our kids are older they can read all the naughty t-shirts being sold on the streets. But Phuket and Hua Hin are better family destinations, and the resorts have everything that you don't really need to venture out.

How about Penang?

Hanoi could be good too. My kids loved it, even Ho Chi Minh (though a little bit further). We did Taipei as well, and also Guilin / Yangshuo is a little it over an hour flight. Don't hear good things about Sanya. We went to Manila twice as well, but have friends there. We did 4D/3N Bangkok with the children (still love it), KL is feasible just like Singapore (although a little further again). Otherwise, Shanghai. Especially with a morning flight and later afternoon / early evening flight back into Hong Kong. My kids do fine in cities, we'll pick hotels with swimming pools so it doesn't have to be a resort (mine are now 6 - almost 7 and 4).
