putting kids on a waiting list

Hi there
We moved back from HK three years ago and now are considering moving back. At the time, we knew we were going back to the states so we din't register our son in a school. He was attending preschool in HK. Right now our daughter is 2 and our son is 6. What is the procedure, how to register them for school?? I know wait lists are so long, so I would like to do this even before moving back.
We would register our daughter in a local school(we would like her to learn the language and at that age, we think it would be easier) and our boy in an International9 He is finishing first grade in NY this summer) If we move it would be Mid Levels, Kawloon or Pork Fu Lam
Any suggestions? Thanks

Are you considering an immediate return (i.e. before next August) or something in the 12-18 month time frame? If the latter, you can apply for the international school place as part of the normal procedure for school year 2013-14. If you are looking to start for 2012-13, or sometime during that term, you'll need to be on the phone today with the various international schools asking about their procedures for getting an application in at this late date. For example at HKIS because he is coming from an American school system he might get some priority over other applicants on the wait list. There may be a few smaller international schools that might still have an opening you could query. There are also some Direct Subsidy Scheme schools that teach some classes in English. That might be another option if the international schools are full.

The local school should be a bit easier, but it will be based on where you are living. You'll also have the ESF option for your older child as well, but you'll need an address first before you can get going on those.
