Possible move, cost of living question

We are planning a possible move to HK, at this stage I would pick up a teaching job and DH wouldn't work.

We have two children, 4 and 2.

How much HKD would be need per month to survive?

I am hoping kids school fees would be covered in a job offer and maybe some rent assistance.

Just need to know if it is do-able on one wage.

Personally I don't think its doable with only 1 of you working.

HK is an expensive city. Here's a Cost of Living article

As a teacher you would probably earn anywhere from 30-60K/mth. Rent would be your biggest expense. I haven't heard of schools paying for preschool fees but they will for primary, which is from age 5.

i think HKIS and CDNIS covers reception fees if the parent is a teacher?

$60K is going to be tight. there are always going to be little extras when it comes to schools, uniforms, field trips, pta fees ...and it all adds up! rent is another biggie! the article rani referenced is a good one.

Rent alone is going to kill off most of your income.
We find water, gas and electricity to be cheap here (too cheap, really), but food to be horrendously expensive. And you can make water expensive by buying the bottled stuff.
Have to factor in transportation costs, which might or might not be higher depending on what you are used to (big help, that one).
And then entertainment costs, plus the aforementioned school costs.
Not a cheap place to live.

exagerate figures

Look, I live with a wife and two daughters, and I have the only income, a part from some occasional jobs of my wife. I would tell you that you can get by with 35k per month, although of course 45k will give you more peace of mind. Of course the more you have the better you live. The main expenses will be the place to live and the school for your children. Food and services are pretty cheap, unless you crave for your own country food all the time. But if you are adaptable, and look for a place to stay maybe in the New Territories, in a village house, you can easily get along. The more you have, the more you will be able to save and enjoy

It really does depend on your standard of living. As PP said 35K is doable. If this kids shared a room then you could a smaller place and save some money there. If you lived out of the center like Sai Kung then rents are cheaper too.

Other than the rent I don't find things more expensive than home (Australia) - I could not believe how much things were when I went back!

All the best in your decision.
