Dear all,

I am a confused dad as I am a busy airman and don' t know much about school thingy. My son is 2 years 2 now (born April 2009) and my wife was talking
about admissions today. Before she realizes that I have no clue about this stuff, please Let me know when & how admissions, & registration works. She mentioned ESF schools. My son is attending Discovery Mind international play group I believe. We live in DB. Thanks for all the help. cheers, dad

Your child can go to kindergarten when he's 3. I would recommend that you choose one where Cantonese is used so that he will be ready for school when he's 6. My son picked it up within about 3 months: it's much easier at that age. He will also learn Chinese script, Mandarin and English. Some kindergartens are more multilingual than others, but equipping your son to speak Cantonese and Mandarin is absolutely essential if you want him to function effectively in HK society. In K3, forms will be issued through the kindergarten to apply for primary school places. These are allocated under a points system, but you can choose a school in the first round: if you have enough points, you're in. If not, you go through central allocation, in which you list 3 schools, although there's no guarantee you'll get into one of your choices. No tuition fees are payable, but you have to buy the textbooks and uniforms. Unfortunately, I don't know about schools in your area, but the EDB website should have some info.
