Li Sing Tai Hang and Po Kok Primary School, and thoughts on Chinese speaking schools

Hi,
I'm new to this forum, but would really appreciate some insights into the primary schools in HK. We have moved from the UK to HK 2 weeks ago and will be here only for 6, possibly 9 months. Our daughter is 7 years old and I am hoping that she can attend a local school in HK for the time that we are here and pick up Cantonese (rather than PTH).

My knee-jerk reaction is to place her in non-chinese local schools as she doesn't speak Chinese. And we are looking at Li Sing Tai Hang and Po Kok Primary School. I would appreciate any insight/reviews/experience with the 2 schools.

In one of the interviews, the principal suggested to me that I should place her in a Chinese speaking local school if I really want her to learn Cantonese. Can someone offer insights into whether Chinese Speaking schools will be a possibility for a student who doesn't speak the language? As a mum, I am reluctant to do this because it will be a hard transition for her. My daughter is exposed to Cantonese (I speak some) but by no means fluent and can only read easy characters. Would it be possible for her, and for me as a parent, to navigate and survive in a Local Chinese School. If so, any suggestions on how to approach local Chinese schools? I can't read the Chinese school websites. We live in Wan Chai.

I would love any feedback - much appreciated!

Hello aiying,

Li Sing Tai Hang is indeed a "local" government run school but caters primarily to ethnic minorities. The medium of teaching is in English, with only Chinese taught in Chinese (Cantonese). If you have decided to forgo the International School route , the,n this is an option, however, do note that many parents are immigrants from South Asian countries. It could work and may be a good fit, especially in exposing your child to others from different backgrounds. Many of these kids, however disadvantaged, do move onto other "elite" or prestigious Band 1 schools in the vicinity.

Hope this helps.
