Hey ladies,

I might be jumping the gun here. I want to know if there are kindies that are disabilities friendly? There's a kid that we may, may, may adopt that is from China with a walking disability and I'm wondering which are the kindies that will take him in. Oh, he's 4 and never been to school and how much of a disadvantage is that. Thanks!

I don't know if this is suitable but you can try the Child Development Centre @ Matilda Hospital. They run a pre-school programme for special needs children.

Here's the website: www.cdchk.org

I think if the disability is only a physical one (walking) - then you'll be OK if you find a kindie that has an elevator or is on the G/F.

Then it will likely also depend on whether he is in a wheelchair or on crutches, or uses a cane. So, go and visit the kindies you are interested in and take a look and ask the teachers or headmistress.

At my kids' primary school (and ESF school), there is a girl w/ sever physical disabilities (in a wheelchair, very few fine motor skills,) and she is progressing through the normal schooling (as far as I know). I think she went to an ESF kindie before primary school.

Sunniefaith, you can also talk to Watchdog, one of the 2 English-speaking centres for a wide-range of disabled children from 0 to 6 years old. http://www.watchdog.org.hk/ You have to, however, register your kid with the Social Welfare Department (if this is how they are called nowadays).

BTW, will you be interested to provide private English tutoring to a 9-year-old who is in an international school? He needs some help in writing. Contact me at [email protected]
