Is it possible to go for a local school?

Hi, my son was born in hk but being educated in China. He is attending Year 8 of a British International School. We plan to be move back to hk this summer, can anyone please give me some advice whether he can fit in the local school as his chinese may only be around P.6 level. We are now considering Shatin College, St Paul Co-ed, La Salle College, but worry about his chinese level. Is there any other choices?

Those are really hard schools to get into (LaSalle & St. Paul's Co-Ed). If he's in F1 (age ~12) I think he can drop the Chinese and choose the French option.

Shatin College is not considered a "local" school, it's ESF.

Also, you do know that LaSalle & Shatin College are in Kowloon and the NT and St. Paul's Co-Ed is on HK Island, right?

Other possible EMI in Kowloon that's not such a "big name" is Bishop Hall

Where are you going to live in HK? That will affect your choice of school. The EDB can help with school listings in your area. You'll then need to visit the school and also approach the EDB to put your child in the Non-Local Students Adaptation course for about 6 months to help him adapt to the system. (the name of the course is probably not right, but the EDB will know what you mean.

We are going to live in Fanling or Mongkok. Do you mean we have to select the school according to the Educational Department's region policy?

Is it a must for the kid to go through the 'Student Adaption Programme' before entering a local school?

For someone joining in P3, it might work differently, and you'll need to ask the EDB about how to apply to a school at this stage. As for district, I'd recommend choosing in the district you are going to live in simply so that your son can get enough sleep. In Fanling, I can recommend 2 schools: Pentecostal Yu Leung Fat and Pentecostal Gin Mao Sheng. Is the adaptation programme a must? I don't think so, but it's probably helpful, and the school place will be held while your son goes through it. The only issue is that it may not be run in North District. Again the EDB should be able to help you.
