Is it hopeless?

We're considering a move to HK this summer. (we'll know within the next 2 weeks) We have 2 kids, aged 6yo and 8yo.
I'm very concerned about the waiting list situation. Surely we're not the only parents to have to move on short notice- what do people do? Will our kids just not have school?
Help! any advice is appreciated

Ah hah! I knew it!

Thank you so much for the info- I knew there must be some way to make it work. Sounds like its still a little iffy, but not quite as daunting as I originally thought.

The scheme was actually launched last summer. Another member, was having a bit of trouble getting his kids into the ESF schools in his area. His wife/kids were in New Zealand for almost 6 mths waiting, while he was working here. He finally got them in thru the scheme.

Are there schools other than ESF available to people who are re locating? And if so do they also have waiting lists?

Other than ESF, there are plenty of international schools.

Many of them, especially those on the Hong Kong Island and in the Kowloon side (such as the Australian Int'l, French Int'l, German-Swiss Int'l, just to name a few), however, do have long waiting lists. Nevertheless, in the New Territories side a few of them should have rooms, or at least, not have long queues. I particularly recommend Japanese Int'l, which offers high quality primary education (following the IB Primary year programme). (Well, not sure if I have to declare the possible conflict of interest: my kids are studying there.) Then a natural question is: why there are rooms. Well, because of the uneven spatial distribution of wealth! While local schools are free, every Int'l school is charging a handsome amount and only middle-middle class or above would find them affordable, and more middle-middle class families are living on the Island or in Kowloon than in the New Territories, because most of them are working in the Central, Wan Chai and Causeway Bay (Hong Kong Island) or Tsim Sha Tsui, Jordan and Mongkok (Kowloon).

What may seem contradictory to my above argument is that the (only) ESF school in the New Territories, Shatin Junior/Shatin College, has probably the longest waiting list among all ESF school, whilst those in the five primary and three secondary ESF schools on the Island are shorter. However, I believe it is because of the difference in the ratios of the number of places to the population size. I do not have any figures at hand but I remember that the population size of the Island is much much smaller than that in the New Territories.

Anyway, my simple answer is the original question is: NO, not hopeless; you definitely can find a good school for your kids if you do not restrict yourself to a particular one.

Don't be daunted by your situation. My motto is that the vast amount of learning that any child does can best be facilitated in the home. Books in both languages, music lessons, dance/movement, art appreciation can all be done on the home front. I certainly wish you all well and that the move is as smooth as silk!

No room at the Inn!!!!

This a very interesting thread to me and the general theme is somewhat at odds with what I am actually experiencing. Specifically I am also planning a move to HK over the summer which we are very excited about, but the schooling seems seems like it might be a deal breaker. My 6 year old will join the equivalent of UK year 3 in August and so far we do not have a glimmer of a place. We have applied for the corporate surety scheme but I think even this may be oversubscribed and we are on waiting lists with a number of schools which are for the most part 5 or 6 times greater than the expected number of places. Are there really some scholos with places? Love to know which ones. I am wondering what our contingency might be? Is home tutoring with a qualified tutor legal and available or am I overblowing this and in reality we will get a place. We are pretty flexible about location in the short term. Any thoughts

Hi Jeremy,

Personally I think its a bit early. As new families are arriving HK in the summer, many are also leaving and the schools haven't been notified of their departures. ESF has informed us that we will need to pay for Sept's tuition in June to secure a place. Hence, by June/July the schools will have a better idea of spaces available. Don't give up hope just yet. Things will change in a couple of months.

HTH!
