I just attended my 4-year old's school orientation and I found out that they are now expected to do homework everyday! Admittedly it's not long homework, maybe 5-10 minutes top, but the ones that include writing letters and characters are freaking me out a bit!! My son does not even grip his pencil properly yet!! ARGGHH.

How much homework do your kids have now? How long does it take for them to finish?

My son had homework once a week at that age. It came on fridays and it was absolute hell getting it done on the weekends. About 2 lines of Capital letter, 2 lines of small letter, 3 lines of a number, the number in spelling. Some days it took him about 15 mins and most of the time it was an agonising hour or more !

They don't even teach them to write properly and expect so much work to be done. suddenly they are writing long words like sixteen and eighteen and they haven't been taught small letters properly.

I doubt they really know what they are doing. And don't get me started on the guiding lines. In the homework books they have 4 guide lines, in the classwork books it is 5 lines. Each time my son would sit to write he'd be confused - which line do I start from, which lines to touch !! I'm so glad he's out of that school !

My kids are 9 & 11.

The 9 year-old has ~ 40 minutes a day from the school - but then another hour from his parents (1/2 of which is his instrument practice).

The 11 year-old - maybe an hour or so a day (not including music practice) - but it's also hard to judge. She does lots of projects on the weekend, sometimes spends hours - but she drawing and cutting and sewing & designing or else researching.
