Catholic Mission School

Reply from Anne Murphy ITS

This is an aided school, but they are more inclusive than others. In 2011, the school opened an ‘International Class’ for Primary 1 students with the medium of teaching mainly in English. The curriculum of the International class is adjusted to suit the learning needs of international students and the school has specific classes for non-Chinese speaking children so they can learn to read and write Chinese.

My son (french) is in P2 in this school. It is a very nice school, very caring and the teachers are fantastic. They have an internationalized curriculum ad they also practise a small class policy (max 15 students). In my son class, they are 3 westerns out of 13 students and the others are from various background. another of my children is going to be in P1 next year and we have understood that the quorum will be about the same if not highter. If you have any question, do not hesitate, i ll be happy to reply :)

I have received a few PM asking for more information but i guess it is always nice to share with others posters so my replies here :

My son had an interview and a test of english and maths. They did not test his chinese as he did not speak any Chinese at this time.
My second son get there with the school allocation system and because he was a sibling they offer him a spot.
They will have 3 P1 Classes next year.
The english teacher is the class teacher, she is chinese but her english is very good. I heard that they are hiring native english teachers.
They have 2 hours of madarin everyday taugh by a native chinese.
English, maths and General studies is taught in english
PE and alla assemblies are in cantonese. It was a concern for us as we were afraid 3 languages on top of the home language (french for us) was a lot. But our son does not seem to bother. He has Cantonese speakers friends and they play in english / cantonese in the playground.
The school in itself is in sheung chau and they provide school bus. From discovery bay, my son leave with the 7.15 ferry (5 kids this year and probably 8 or 9 next year) and he is at school at 8.00. After school, they finish at 3.30 and he is at home at 4.15.
They have quite a few homework but most of the time it is done in less than an hour. They can also do the homework at school.
The school has good value and they make sure the students know and respect them.
my son did not speak any chinese and very small english when he starts school. He does not feel left behind.

I hope this helps :)

Do not hesitate to ask your questions, we are really pleased with this school.

and of course quite important but it is a free school. But they do get to go to a lot of outing (free most of the time and very cheap otherwise) such as disneyland / ocean park / museums ...
