Was just wondering - I know that when one is pregnant, she should refrain from getting highlights or colouring for her hair - but it is ok to get highlights while one is breastfeeding? Thanks.

I did that twice during the one year while I was breastfeeding, baby seems fine.

I did it when I was pregnant AND breastfeeding. Though when I was pregnant I used a fast colour dye. Now I just use the normal one.
highlights should be ok as the dye doesn't really get all over the scalp. Most commercial dyes now are made to be quite safe anyway. So unless you are going with heavy peroxide all over you should be fine. I drilled my hairdresser on it when I first got pregnant and so she checked it out for me to make sure we were doing the right thing.
