waiting list - is there an end?

hi everyone,
i am having nightmares trying to secure admission for my sons in HK. We were in HK about 2 years ago when my son went to Bradbury school, I have re-applied to the same school but they tell me that although he is on priority he is on a waiting list, his no. is 17..anyone knows how good or bad that is? Also I have heard that kids don;t get admission for months together? So what is the way out? Pay hefty application fees only to be put on waiting lists? Is there any school that may consider my application and just give us a confirmed place? Mums who have gone thru this nightmare pls. help!!

It depends on the year level, but number 17 could easily still take a year. I know people how are number 43 and 117 ... so in that sense 17 is good. At our ESF school about 10-15 kids per year level leave per school year, but the majority over the summer holiday. I would think Bradbury may move a little more quickly because it has more expats, but still. Also some kids in front of him may have spots already elsewhere, but possibly all 16 want a spot, you don't know. Have you looked at Delia School of Canada for the mean time? They tend to have openings a little more easily. Or Harbour School? Korean International? All on the island and they may be able to give you a spot at least for the coming year.

Mommy 3, thank you for your reply. I will look up Harbour school like u said, but Delia is ONtario education system and Korean I guess would be Korean system, my son is on UK system so I do not want to drastically change things for him....unless of crse if push comes to shove and i have no option left!

Also has anyone gained admission in ESF by knowing someone in the school, board of trustees, etc? does that work as I do have some remote connection in the Board and wondering whether it is worth taking a favour? thanks again and pls. do give more suggestions.

hi i was just going thru the Korean school website which states that it has an International stream offering UK-curriculum so just wanted to correct my information given earlier. Just going thru the site gave me a feeling that this is strict no-nonsense, work-hard kind of school, any views on Korean school anyone??

Can't comment on Korean, but I just wanted to say, I think you should go look at the options, and take what you can get for now. You can always change. Take a worst case scenario ... you won't get a spot until next summer (you should be OK by then as number 17 on the list). Have no idea about your previous question ... Mind you that most of the other ones on the list above you will probably have priority too (being in another ESF school, sibling, etc.).

Hi there Mushi, it took us 5 months to get our youngest into school...nightmare.
Our two boys are now at The Harbour School in Kennedy Town. It is a lovely school, small classes with good teacher ratios. It doesn't have all the glitzy stuff like some schools and their fees are slightly higher in comparison but they make up for that with individual programs for the children. Our 9 year old is enjoying it very much but our 6 year old is struggling a little due to us coming from the Australian system...he wants more play time lol :) What year is your child going in to? :)

hi carms1, my elder son is in Year 3 and my little one who is 3.5 yrs is in Nursery. thanks for yr advice, I saw the Harbour school but besides the fees being high it is a little far away from us as we would like to stayin Happy Valley. My little one has secured admission in Woodland school in Happy Valley and since i am trying for Bradbury i would like to stay put in their catchment....let's see how it goes, I might just apply to Harbour and see how it takes them to call us. Is there an admission test?

there's no admission test, they have the children spend half a day there to see which class they would best suit, quite informal and relaxed really compared to some other schools :)
We travel quite a distance to the school as do a number of other children, bonus is they have a school bus that picks up from designated points on Hong Kong Island...no harm in enquiring :) Good luck :)

hi carms1

How many students per teacher? I am looking for smaller class size for my children because they need learning support especially my son with speech delay and he has been in speech therapy since he was 3.5 yrs old. He will be 6 in January.

Thanks,
Yvonne
