Hi,
not so sure if communication was the issue, more likely cultural expectation. Husband and I are from warmer cultures with a good public health system in his case - I guess he found the system here colder than he expected. On the other hand, HK-ers are used to their own culture which can seem a bit cold (lacking empathy) when compared with warmer cultures and may consider a similar experience ours as being well within their norm.
Of course, the cost, thanks to the HK id card, was little or nothing. Some may say - what do you expect for such a low cost? Its a reasonable question.
I think overall the public system here for births, before, during and after is quite good, if lacking in warmth. Expertise seems not the highest in the public clinic but its virtually free and we can choose more expensive care if we decide to pay for it.
Best of luck with the birth.
