Bilingual Schools on HK side - St Stephen's?

Quick question about St. Stephen's --

I just went to their site and noted that they use Putonghua for
Putonghua for the subject Chinese and Social and Cultural Studies

If the child's first language is English, would he/she be able to keep up with the subjects that are taught in Putonghua? Does the school send home notices in English AND Chinese or only in one language (which is it)?

Hello MeowMeow

Sorry for the late reply! My twins are waitlisted. I really like the school as it is pretty unique in Hong Kong. Aside from the academic curriculum which would be perfect for us, it provides all round education (ie lots of emphasis on music, arts, sports) and is located in a wonderful open location, right on the beach with lots of open air and space. It has its own swimming pool and football fields which is rare amongst local schools too. But as I said, we are waitlisted and any further glimmer of hope will probably not emerge until June- September when the other kids confirm their places.

As for Buckeroo's question, I imagine all school notices are bilingual. Certainly all the information I received prior to the twins' interview was bilingual (which was lucky because I don't read Chinese).

Hope this helps.

Teaching in mothertongue

Hi,

I just called the kindergarten section of St Stephens and they replied to me that they teach the children in their mother tongue - that is in Cantonese.

Probably their primary section will be bilingual?

did you ring up the right school? St Stephen's Girls school (lyttleton rd) fits your description.

I am in the exact same situation and have the same thoughts as you about choosing a school that is not too pressured but also teaches good mandarin and english. My daughter is in Victoria Kindergarten and it's an absolutely great school that has met all my requirements. I will let her go on to their primary if she gets in as the competition is getting tougher. You can also consider that school. Hope it helps.
